Professor of English at the University of Kent at Canterbury. Previous posts include the Chair of English at the Australian National University in Canberra, and Director of the Armstrong Browning Library at Baylor University in Texas. He is author of some 17 books, and over 90 articles – mostly in the field of literature and theology – including Words and the Word (1986). His most recent monograph is Modernity and the Reinvention of Tradition: Backing into the Future (2009).
