SIR: Holly et al. 1 recently reported finding smokingrelated mutagenic activity in cervical mucus. Of 36 current smokers, 39% had positive mutagenicity tests, compared to 12% of 42 nonsmokers. An effect of smoking on cervical mucus might help to explain the association between smoking and cervical neoplasia seen in some epidemiologic investigations. Consequently, as part of an ongoing epidemiologic investigation of cervical dysplasia, we used the same collection method and mutagenicity assay as Holly et al. 1 to test cervical mucus from 55 women obtaining routine Pap smears at the Georgetown University Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics. We report findings that may alter the interpretation of the smoking effect found by Holly et al. 1The women in our study ranged in age from 19 to 75 years old (mean, 30 yr). Fifty-five percent of the women were black; the remainder were white. Twenty percent of the women were pregnant at the time of sample collection. We purposefully oversampled smokers, so the proportion of current smoking in our study group (65%) was artificially elevated.
