The magnitude a nd frequency dependence of liver attenuation coefficients have been derived from signal processing o f ultrasonic echoes from a modified B-scan imaging instrument. Data were analyzed from liver scans of 59 individuals, of which 21 cases were presumed normal, and the remainder involved with diffuse liver disease such as alcoholic liver disease, chemotherapy toxicity, liver metastases, and others. The results show that normal attenuation values for human liver are 0.0542 0.009 np/cm-MHz (or 0.47 db/cm-MHz) with a frequency dependence of fn where n=1.05 i 0.25. in agreement with in-vitro studies of mammalian livers. Further analyses showed no significant r elationship between attenuation coeffcients and results of CT or conventional ultrasonic examination, or the degree of fibrosis as graded from liver biopsies. However, a significant correlation was found between high attenuation and a bnormal liver function tests. High attenuation is also associated with ingestion of alcohol, chemotherapeutic agents, and steroids, all of which may affect liver fat content as a common pathway.
