Orange and carrot extract, pollen diffusate, peptone, and a mixture of glucose and casamino acids greatly stimulated germination of conidia ofColletotrichum lindemuthianumwhich was poor in water. Urea and glucose and casamino acids separately had little effect.Orange extract and the glucose/casamino acids mixture altered the ways in which the pathogen grew after germination. With increasing concentration of these additives more spores germinated with appressoria at the ends of increasingly thicker germ tubes instead of more directly with no or very thin germ tubes. Large-diameter germ tubes with no appressoria were also formed. These additives almost completely suppressed formation of lesions when added to spore suspensions placed on hypocotyls. Other additives that greatly stimulated spore germination did not affect the development of lesions.Orange extract seems to control disease in the first place by changing the form of growth of the parasite on the hypocotyl surface and not by altering the susceptibility of the host, though this may happen later. The implications of these results for the control of diseases caused by this and similar fungi are discussed.
