Except for the extensor expansion and the mechanically beautiful arrangement of the flexor digitorum superficialis, few surgeons or anatomists would be able to identify the separate tendons of the hand. Far from being featureless it is becoming clear that each tendon in the hand, like each small bone has a characteristic appearance which has arisen largely as a result of its internal architecture, its situation and the function it serves. Our attention was first drawn to the groove on the volar surface of the tendon of flexor digitorum profundus over the distal two segments of the finger (Rank, Wakefield and Hueston, 1969). This groove is so characteristic that it allows the identification of the isolated tendon and, although absolutely constant it has so far escaped description in classical textbooks of anatomy. Since the appearance of the extensor expansion and the flexor digitorum superficialis had been demonstrated as due to the arrangement of their fibre bundles, the next logical step was to study the intratendinous architecture of the flexor digitorum profundus. Our results are an extension of an earlier study by Martin (1958).
