In October 2019, scientists from diverse disciplines met at a US National Science Foundation-funded workshop near Lake Tahoe (USA) to discuss the emerging threat of attached filamentous algal blooms (FABs) to littoral zones of lakes with high water quality. Littoral zones harbor the majority of lake biodiversity and regulate nutrient flux from the watershed. Increased development around clear lakes, as well as increased nutrient loading (eg, atmospheric nitrogen) and perhaps loss of grazers, appears to be promoting the exuberant growth of filamentous green algae (chlorophytes) in littoral zones.[Extracted from the article]Copyright of Limnology & Oceanography Bulletin is the property of Wiley-Blackwell and its content may not be copied or emailed to multiple sites or posted to a listserv without the copyright holder's express written permission.
