Mitral cells of the olfactory bulb were inhibited by the electrophoretic application in their vicinity of γ-aminobutyrate (GABA),dl-homocysteate (DLH) or noradrenaline. The effects of GABA and of noradrenaline were reversibly abolished by the simultaneous ejection of bicuculline from another barrel of the electrode; that of DLH was changed to an excitation: some cells situated close to mitral cells were excited by DLH and by noradrenaline. The inhibition of the antidromic response of mitral cells by a conditioning volley in the lateral olfactory tract was reduced by bicuculline: however the pause in cell firing after a single olfactory tract stimulus was lengthened. The results suggest (a) that granule cell-mitral cell inhibition may be GABA-mediated; (b) that granule cells receive both excitatory noradrenergic and inhibitory GABA-mediated inputs.
