The frequency of the heart beat observed by means of a glass window in the egg shell was found to increase with age. The rate of acceleration of this increase is at first rapid. By the 5th day of incubation it increases slowly, and fluctuates cyclically about a mean value. The variation in the rate of heart beat of individual embryos is much less than appears from graphs in which the data from many individuals are grouped. The variation in some individual cases is as small from the 34th to the 40th hrs., when the atrium is acting as pacemaker, as it is when the sinus is initiating the beat of the entire heart. These changes may in part be due to changes in the internal environment of the myocardium, but there is no evidence that they were caused by any external fluctuations impinging on the embryo.
