This chapter focuses on the role that SIs play/ have in measuring sustainability in the build environment and is structured under three main sections. First, in the introduction the paper reflects on whether one can actually measure sustainability; it briefly discusses various definitions of sustainability and why is important to measure sustainability. The second section focuses entirely on SIs. It looks at their role and characteristics, and pauses on the two methodological models that characterise the process of their development: expert-led (or top-down) and citizen-led (or bottom-up). It also introduces a third and alternative methodological model, the hybrid model, which aims to fill the gap between top-down and bottom-up developed SIs. Finally, the third part looks at certification schemes for the built environment, such as BREEAM and LEED, where SIs are aggregated in indexes, used to assess the ‘performance’ of buildings and neighbourhoods. The paper concludes by discussing some of the problems associated with the use of SIs and certification schemes in the built environment such as ‘one size doesn’t fit all’, expert biased processes and unequal consideration of sustainability pillars; but also their merits including raising awareness, disseminating sustainability knowledge and aiding decision making processes.
