The structure of a new diterpenoid, xenicin, isolated from a soft coral X. elongata, was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Xenicin possesses a 9-membered carbocyclic ring transfused to a dihydropyran ring. The crystals are monoclinic, space group C2, 4 molecules/cell with dimensions a = 17.704 (3), b = 9.061 (2), c = 18.656 (4) .ANG.; .beta. = 113.33 (2).degree.. The intensity data (3015) were collected on an automatic diffractometer. The structure, determined by direct methods, was refined by least-squares methods. The final R was 0.046 for all the data.
