1.1. DecapitatedAvenacoleoptiles supplied with 3-indoleacetic acid (IAA) show the same type of curvature response to transversely applied direct current (20 μa. for 2 min.) as previously observed in intact coleoptiles. This supports the contention that IAA is the naturally occurring auxin inAvena.2.2. Curvature responses of decapitated coleoptiles to transversely applied current are IAA-requiring growth responses.3.3. Evidence is presented which demonstrates that these curvature responses are due to IAA redistribution brought about by lateral transport.4.4. Lateral transport of IAA is brought about by a state of polarity in the plant tissue and is not directly mediated by the flow of externally applied current.5.5. The requirements of a functional polarity in the tissue are fulfilled by the electrical polarity, which is established by the application of direct current but is not dependent on the presence of IAA in the coleoptile.
