Electrophysiological examination of the retina is, currently, the only objective, non-invasive method that provides information about the functional status of the retina. It is suitable for the differentiation of the functions of the rod and cone systems, the diffuse and local, hereditary and acquired diseases of the retina, and the conditions accompanied by damage to the retina and the optic nerve. It also provides useful information for the diagnosis of visual losses of unknown origin. This group of assessments includes time-consuming examinations with special equipment needs, and they require qualified and experienced personnel to order, perform and evaluate them. A general principle is that electrophysiology should not be the first diagnostic method, and it should be performed based on the results of psychophysical tests only. The exceptions for this principle are patients that are unable to cooperate and pediatric patients. Comparison of the results (between institutions, within a country and internationally) is feasible only if the tests are performed in accordance with a uniform protocol, but even such a protocol does not eliminate the need for the establishment of age-specific reference ranges at each examination site. The reliability of the results is confirmed by reproducibility. The International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision (ISCEV) issues and regularly updates guidelines summarizing standard examination conditions for each method (www.iscev.org).
