Abstract Two antarctic diatoms were studied in light and electron microscopes, and emended descriptions are given. Thalassiosira australis Peragallo is found to have strutted processes in clusters on the face of the valve as well as in a marginal ring, one labiate process and usually many occluded processes in a ring inside the margin, and a fasciculated areola pattern. Coscinodiscus lentiginosus Janisch is transferred to Thalassiosira because it has strutted processes scattered singly over the face of the valve as well as in a single marginal row. It also has one labiate process on the mantle and often a fasciculated areola pattern. Both diatoms have each strutted process on the valve taking the place of an areola, an external foramen, and an internal cribrum.
