In the slightly narcotized cat the spontaneous oscillogram of the anterior grey substance (cervical cord) is characterized by irregular waves of low voltage; that of the posterior (sacrolumbar) region by a still lower voltage. These properties result from the asynchronism of the individual neuronic pulsations, since the irregular waves give way to large and regular sinusoidal waves under the influence of certain treatments. There is a clear synergism between the cortex and the grey spinal substance as shown by the parallelism of groups of waves and even of individual waves. The spinal electrical activity is much more resistant to anoxemia than that of the cortex, but more sensitive to the synchronizing action of strychnine. Nicotine produces a non-synchronizing excitation without any sign of tetanus, strychnine on the other hand is both exciting and synchronizing. The similarity of reflex and spontaneous waves indicate their close relationship. This fact and its bearing on the mechanism of central reflex function are further discussed. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: J.
