A comparison with points of usage related to the occurrence of ne in English seems interesting. The problem of expletive ne was already noted by Joly2 in relation to Alfred's and Aelfric's English. Joly mentions the theory which Bacquet3 put forward in (1962):'... on'note également dans certains cas, ce que l'on pourrait appeler une négativité par concordance dans les conjonctives qui suivent des principales contenant un verbe de sens négatif (quoted by Joly 1972, 34). Later stages of English also attest the presence of a ne particle, the value of which is liable to be subj ect to variation, as will be shown in the present article.
