Notonia grandiflora Candolle (1833: 518)(Asteraceae: Senecioneae) is a succulent subshrub endemic to Indian peninsula and northern Thailand (Trimen 1895, Kitamura & Gould 1982, Mathur 1995, Vanijajiva et al. 2014). It is currently accepted as Kleinia grandiflora (DC.) Rani (1983: 801). So far, the name has not been typified, and the issue is dealt with in this paper. Before the lectotypification, we need to clarify the controversy over the valid publication of Notonia grandiflora. The name first appeared in the discussion following the description of the genus of Notonia Candolle (1833: 518). In that discussion, N. grandiflora was designated as the type of Notonia. It was also stated to be based on Wallich’s “Cacalia grandiflora”(Wall. Cat. 3147/257; Wallich 1831), and accompanied by a descriptive statement of the size of capitula (“ses fleurs ont environ un pouce de longueur”[its flowers are about an inch in length]). Soon later, Wight (1834: 24) recorded it in his work on the flora of India, and provided more detailed descriptions. Apart from Wall. Cat. 3147/257, Wight (1834) cited another gathering, Wight Cat. 1485. Some researchers (eg, Rani 1983, Mathur 1995, Vanijajiva et al. 2014) accepted that Candolle (1833) had validly published N. grandiflora, while many others (eg, Hooker 1881, Trimen 1895, Cooke 1908, Kitamura & Gould 1982) considered the name only validated later by Wight (1834). According to Shenzhen Code (Turland et al. 2018), the description provided by Candolle (1833), although minimal, has technically satisfied the requirement of valid publication of a name (Art. 38.1 a and Art. 38.3). Notonia grandiflora Candolle (1833) is thus valid. Since the valid publication of Notonia grandiflora by Candolle (1833) is accepted, the gathering of Wight Cat. 1485 cited by Wight (1834) surely should not be considered as the original material of the name. In G-DC, there are six gatherings labeled as the [syn] types of Notonia grandiflora, viz. B. Heyne sn (G00472141, http://www. ville-ge. ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/adetail. php? id= 338485&lang= en), Herb. Madras sn (G00472161, http://www. ville-ge. ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/adetail. php? id= 338487&lang= en); JF Royle 246 (G00472132, http://www. ville-ge. ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/adetail. php? id= 338489&lang= en); PJ Noton sn (G00472156, http://www. ville-ge. ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/adetail. php? id= 338488&lang= en), and two gatherings of Wight (G00472160, http://www. ville-ge. ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/adetail. php? id= 338486&lang= en; and G00472155, http://www. ville-ge. ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/adetail. php? id= 338490&lang= en). Among them, a gathering of Wight (G00472155) was received by Candolle in 1834, clearly postdating Candolle (1833). JF Royle 246 was collected in 1833, but probably also received after the publication of Candolle (1833), because it was cited by Candolle (1838) in his Prodromus but not mentioned in Candolle (1833). Therefore, they should not be the original material of N. grandiflora either. The remaining four are the gatherings associated with Wall. Cat. 3147/257 (Wallich 1831), on which N. grandiflora was stated to be based (Candolle 1833). They thus serve as the syntypes of the name. Among them, PJ Noton sn was best preserved and is here designated as the lectotype of N. grandiflora.
