I . Living granulated cells: HE discovery and early history of the mast cell is associated with our T early knowledge of connective tissue. Most of the initial investigations were made on living tissues. Cells with coarse granules were reported which, because of their perivascular habitat and marked polymorphism of cytoplasm, in many instances undoubtedly represented tissue mast cells. In this non-specific manner v. Recklinghausen ( 1 8 6 3 ) ~ Kuhne ( 1 864) , Koelliker (1867) , Friedlander (1867) , Cohnheim (1869) , Rollett (1871), Schobl (1871), and Flemming (1876) may be regarded collectively as the discoverers of the mast cell. Kiihne’s figures of clasmatocyte-like structures in the intermuscular tissue of frog unquestionably represent mast cells. The same may be said of Friedlander’s “ganglion cells” in the heart of frog as subsequently shown by Westphal. The first attempt to classify connective-tissue cells in a modern way was made by Ranvier in (1869). With picro-carmine staining he selected as the chief cellular form of connective tissue the “cellule plate,” a cell type that was flat, isolated and poor in protoplasm.
