This report presents work conducted by BMRB Social Research and Henley Centre Headlight Vision in 2008 on behalf of the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), based on the results of a National Survey of Parents and Children. Two principal outputs have been documented: a comprehensive quantitative analysis of the results (Chapters 2 to 9); and (Chapter 10) a summary of two segmentations which aimed to understand parents and children in terms of their attitudes, aspirations and outcomes in the context of their relationships with each other. The survey was conducted between February and April 2008 and covered a representative sample of 2572 parents with resident children aged 0-19 in England. A further 1154 children aged 10-19 were also interviewed, and all children were sampled from the same households as adults. The linked sample was based on adult-child pair bonds so that the relationship between individuals within the family could be explored in depth. The survey and segmentation followed an initial phase of qualitative work which helped inform the content of the survey.
