This article focuses on a research project seeking to explore the implications of extreme weather events in UK history. The research draws on a wide range of unpublished archival sources to construct episodes of extreme weather and explores how such records afford insight into the different spatial scales at which the impacts of extreme weather have been experienced. It also looks at how extremes have been recorded and remembered over time. Investigations of the memories of, and responses to, such events must form a crucial component of any research that seeks to understand the nature of events that might take place in the future. These weather event histories are also important if we are to be able to assess how different communities in different contexts might be affected by, comprehend and respond to future events.
