The interactions between L-epinephrine (E), L-norepinephrine (NE), L-isoproterenol (IPNE), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and TSH on the secretion of thyroid hormone were studied in mice, in which TSH secretion was either intact (normal mice) or abolished by thyroxine (T4- blocked mice). In T4-blocked mice, each of the amines, like TSH, induced a formation of colloid droplets in the thyroid, accompanied by an increase in blood 131I. The amines and TSH produced additive responses when administered simultaneously, but they were mutually antagonistic when administered with an interval of 2 hr. With an interval of 5 min between the administration of amine and hormone, E and NE caused a diminished response to TSH, whereas 5-HT and IPNE were additive with TSH. In normal mice, E, NE and 5-HT induced a decrease in the blood 131I levels. The findings were interpreted as follows: Under basal conditions, E, NE, IPNE, 5-HT, and TSH induce secretion of thyroid hormone by direct actions on the thyroid follicle cell. The am...
