Administered a battery of language and related measures to 101 8.3–31.1 yr old Down's syndrome individuals. Some of these measures were the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (ITPA), the English Picture Vocabulary Test I, the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, and the Draw-A-Man Test. Ss' spontaneous speech was analyzed using techniques based on those of L. Lassers and G. Low (1960). Results were intercorrelated, and the resulting matrix was factor-analyzed using chronological age as a variable. 28.9% of the variance was accounted for by a General Verbal Ability factor, which loaded highly on all the psycholinguistic tests and the intelligence tests, with moderate loadings on the speech level scores; 8.3% of the variance was accounted for by a Disfluent Speech factor, which loaded strongly on disfluency scores and moderately on intelligence scores. A structure of speech factor accounted for 24.3% of the variance, and loaded highly on the grammatic closure and vocal encoding subtests of the ITPA, and moderately on the Stanford-Binet. In addition, chronological age loaded strongly on this factor. Patterns of language were also examined.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
