The series of events which led to the research reviewed here began in March of 198 1 when Dorothy Krieger asked if we had seen the paper in the recent issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism by Sharp and Pekary'on the presence of@-endorphin in human semen. She was very excited by these observations and suggested that we try to confirm them. There was reluctance on our part at first as we felt that assays performed on semen were often flawed by the presence of proteases. Nonetheless, we obtained semen samples from rabbits which were shown to contain@-endorphin and other pro-opiomelanocortin (P0MC)-derived peptides. These observations led to the studies on which this presentation is based.'"
