The Rockall Trough is a major deep water basin along the western continental margins of Ireland and Britain. High resolution seismic profiling investigations of the SE and SW margins of the Rockall Trough (Fig. 1) by NIOZ in 1987 and subsequently during the ENAMII project (1996–1999, Fig. 1, Fig. 2), complemented by sidescan sonar and seismic results of cruise TTR 7 (Kenyon et al. 1998) revealed the presence of giant carbonate mounds partially covered with cold water carbonate corals along the upper slope of both the SE and SW margins of the Southern Rockall Trough. These mounds have different dimensions and are generally larger, both in diameter and maximum elevation above the seabed, compared with the mounds reported recently from the nearby Porcupine Basin (Hovland et al. 1994) and from the Porcupine Bight (Henriet et al. 1998).
