Precracks generated in purely compressive cycles permit a determination of threshold values [Delta]K[sub th] and crack growth curves with increasing load amplitude only. They also permit to measure the effective threshold [Delta]K[sub eff th] and the dependence of [Delta]K[sub th] on crack length. The production of such precracks is also discussed.
