Design teams targeting high-volume applications with high-performance algorithms have a seemingly wide range of design alternatives from which to choose. Competitive pressures in many markets mean that it is critical that the selected platform should be of sufficient performance to implement the chosen functionality efficiently. Selecting a design platform of much higher performance than required for the application in hand can result in unnecessary cost and power dissipation, leading to an uncompetitive product specification.
