Previous methods of study of the temporomandibular joint are reviewed. A special head holder was devised for this study which permits true lateral exposures of the joint, successive X-ray photographs susceptible to accurate mensuration, and exposure of a field large enough to include joint, teeth, and certain orienting planes of reference. Considerable variation in the relation between size of the fossa and size of condyle was noted. It seems that a complete and correct analysis of the temporomandibular joint and its functions can not be made unless a method is employed in its study which reveals the true position of the mandible in both its resting and closed positions. The evidence of this study indicates that too much emphasis has been placed in the past upon the mechanics of condyle-fossa relationship. The opinions expressed by Robinson (1946) that the muscles are solely responsible for the intricate movements of the jaw seem to be proven by this study.
