This paper examines from an anthropological perspective two rituals performed by the French president, Francois Mitterrand. The first relates to the well-established custom of inauguration and commemoration. The second, the pilgrimage to Solutre, would appear to be an original invention of its protagonist. On the basis of this ethnographic analysis, it is possible to find in modem political rituals the formal procedure that anthropologists have described in traditional societies. In opposition to many who underline the secularization of politics in contemporary societies, it is observed here that rituals such as these visits of the president have a religious dimension. These modem rituals, which participate in the construction of political legitimacy, are characterized by invention and message.
