ESI Global Forum 2014 Development of CAE software for injection and BMC/SMC molding including short/long fiber reinforcement Authors: Ryo Nakano and Katsuya Sakaba, CAE Business Div, Toray Engineering Co., Ltd Pierre Marquette, COE Composites Manufacturing, ESI Group From a view of the lightweight design, glass fibers and carbon fibers reinforced plastics with various lengths are a promising way in injection molding and compression molding like BMC/SMC. Especially, long glass/carbon fibers are expected to realize high performance in elastic modulus and strength of molded parts. For both short and long fibers, fibers orientations and distribution in molding process is a key for plastic parts design. Conventional fibers orientation analysis which can correctly estimate short fibers orientation is suggested to be modified for long fiber because long fibers characteristics of bending and interacting. Also, fibers volume fraction by fiber distribution along cavity portion cannot be predicted by conventional methods. Direct simulation of fibers dynamics of short/long fibers in CAE software “3D TIMON” can be applied to estimate not only fibers orientation but fibers bending, breaking and distribution. BMC/SMC molding CAE which has high applicability to practical part is also newly developed. Conventional injection molding CAE and BMC/SMC molding CAE have been linked with direct fibers simulation. Finally, fibers orientation obtained by molding process simulation can be linked to material property estimation and structural analysis.
