Antennal hygroreceptors of the cockroach, P. americana L., were investigated electrophysiologically. Two antagonistic types were present; 1 responded to moisture, the other to dryness. The moist receptor responded to liquid water with an output pattern almost identical to that evoked by 100% r.h. [relative humidity] stimulation. It is not inhibited by CaCl2 solutions as are dipteran labellar water receptors. Local applications of water show that the sensillar stem guarded by the outer wall may be its specific receptive region. The moist receptor is inhibited by glycerine whereas the dry receptor is excited by it. These effects are consistent with the mild dehydration caused by this substance. Moist and dry receptor types respond to mechanical deformation of the sensillum, but antagonistically. Neither the moist nor dry receptors of Periplaneta are affected by 3 chemical repellents [dimethyl phthalate, 2-ethyl-1,3-hexadienol and N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide] reported to inhibit the moist receptor of the mosquito. Cockroach hygroreceptors apparently transduce humidity changes to electrical potentials through mechanical strains induced in hygroscopic components by relative humidity.
