Differences in body size and stamina require that the cheetah and horse use their bodies differently when running. Slow-motion moving picture sequences from Walt Disney Productions (cheetah) and the Horse Assoc. of Amer. were used to analyze and contrast these differences. Speed and endurance records are presented. Spacing and sequence of footfalls are related to leg action. The support role of the forelegs is described, and the greater facility with which the cheetah changes lead is explained. Body motions and morphological adaptations for speed are correlated with body weight. Phases of the stride are presented so that the duration of each phase is shown, and motions of the feet are correlated both with motions of the shoulders and hips in the vertical plane and with flexion and extension of the body. The cheetah adds significantly to its speed by a measuring-worm action of the spine. Factors contributing to length and rate of stride are enumerated, and the ways that a supple spine benefits speed are described. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: M. Hildebrand
