FACTOR ANALYSIS IN NEUROPSYCHOLOGY 149 alysis is appropriate only for certain interdependency hypotheses (Bechtoldt, 1961; Kendall, 1950, 1957). The procedures of multiple regression and of correlational analysis are appropriate for a dependency hypothesis relevant to the selection of a subset from a larger number of variables; the statistical hypothesis is that the partial correlations among the non-selected variables are independently distributed when the selected variables are combined in a regression equation and their relationships with the non-selected variables are" partialled out."
