The absorption spectra of aqueous solutions of methylene blue over the concentration range from 6 X 10~ 7, Kt to 6 X 10-2 M can be described by assuming a simple reaction, ie, 3D+ D22++ D+ 7= i D33+, where the equilibrium constants are approximately the same. Vapor pressure osmometry measurements have con-firmed that the degree ofaggregation asymptotically approaches 3 as the dye concentration increases. The behavior of the absorption spectra of certain basic dyes upon increasingthe concentration of an aqueous solution of the dye is well known and usually evinces itself as a blue shift of the major absorption band. These deviationsfrom the Beer-Bourget ab-sorption law havebeen ascribed to the aggregation of the dye molecule (see, for example, ref 1-8), which presumably is brought about by dispersionforces arising from the delocalized electrons. 1-3 The role of water in the formation of these aggregates, either as a dielectric sandwiching between the dye molecules5· 6 or
