As with a number of American textbooks, the author seems to make heavy weather of the algebraic manipulation in certain places, showing the effect of a different educational emphasis. In English universities, it is hardly likely that one would give an undergraduate course on precisely this material; some of the ground would be covered in Analysis courses, and finite differences are usually discussed along with their applications in Numerical Analysis. However, this book is a straightforward and readable account of its subject, and might be useful in the library as a background reference.
