MATERIALS AND METHODSFishes and sources. 1) Coelacanth; Latimeria chalumnae (Grande Comore) was obtained through the Coelacanth Research Committee of the British Royal Society. 2) Two species of dipnoans; the African lungfish Protopterus aethiopicus (Uganda) and the South American lungfish Lepidosiren paradoxa (Brazil, Colombia, or Peru) were purchased commercially. 3) Two species of holosteans; the longnose gar Lepisosteus osseus and the bowfin Amia calva (Great Lakes) were kindly supplied by the Department of Biology, Wayne State University, and by the Osborn Laboratories of Marine Sciences, New York. 4) Three species of chondrosteans; the shortnose sturgeon Acipenser brevirostris (Great Lakes) was obtained with cooperation of the Osborn Laboratories of M. arine Sciences, New York. The Nile bichir PoZypterus senegalus and the reed fish Calamoichthys calabaricus (Uganda) were purchased through Tiburon Co. Biomarine Preparations, Seattle. 5) A species of holocephalian, the ratfish Hydrolagus colliei (San Juan Archipelago, Washington) was collected by local fishermen with the cooperation of the Friday Harbor Laboratories, University of Washington. Fishes are all from FW except the coelacanth and the ratfish. The FW fishes had been kept in aquaria for several months before use. Coelacanth and ratfish were killed on the day of capture. Collection of blood and kidney. All fishes except the coelacanth were anesthetized by-immersion in 0.01-0.02% tri-Caine methane sulfonate (Finquel, Ayerst Laboratories). Blood was drawn through a cannula inserted into a major artery such as the ventral aorta, pulmonary artery, or
