the National League for Nursing Council of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs made a significant addition to the criteria for nursing curricula at those educational levels. The revised document states that “the curriculum plan is based on a conceptual framework (s) consistent with the stated philosophy, purposes, and objectives of the program (s).” In the past, instead of being based on an articulated cunceptual framework, many undergraduate nursing programs have been designed as a series of nursing courses, each of which treats a distinct clinical specialty area. As an example of the latter, in the baccalaureate program with which I am currently associated, undergraduate students spend their sophomore year in a course titled Care qf’the Adult. which focuses on the medical and surgical nursing needs of that age group.
