Leaflets of M. pudica alternately close and open when subjected to alternating darkness and light during the daytime. After normal leaf-closure in the evening, the plants remain unresponsive to illumination for several hrs., but regain their sensitivity to light early the following morning. Leaves closed prematurely by darkening early in the afternoon, reopen earlier the next morning. "Dark adaptation," as determined by the time required for leaf closure following sudden darkening, is completed within 30 min., and subsequent reopening of the leaflets in light of the previous intensity occurs in about the same time. Mechanical stimulation causes immediate leaf closure; reopening occurs in about 3 min. whether kept in the light or immediately darkened. Applications of very dilute /3-indolyl acetic acid in lanolin paste to one side of the pulvini caused pronounced movements of petioles and leaflets.
