The influence on gonads and general state of health was investigated using clinical, andrological, spermatological, microbiological and histological methods after inoculation of mycoplasmas via the ductus deferens in male dogs with a vas deferens fistula. On day 23 and 29, respectively, after inoculation, 2 animals showed local reactions within the fistulated gonads which were identified as orchitis and epididymitis. Clinical abnormalities correlated well with the decrease of sperm motility and significant increase (P < 0.05) of aberrant spermatozoa. The microbiological and histological findings are discussed in the light of the incidence of clinical symptoms and the influence of a mycoplasmal infection.
