The data relating to the cyc07 gene in periwinkle and its homolog in yeast and animal cells leads us to various conclusions. The high level of basicity of the cyc07 protein leads us to consider that it has DNA-binding capacity. In fact, antibodies against cyc07 protein, raised against a fusion protein with gene 10 leader peptide expressed in bacteria, revealed the nuclear localization of this protein in plant cells (our unpublished data). However, because of the relatively large amount of this protein in the plant cells, it is difficult to regard this protein as a specific transcriptional regulator for a particular gene. Although its DNA-binding ability still remains to be proven, we can consider the following possibilities. 1) The cyc07 protein may be one of the structural proteins in the chromatin, which binds to DNA without any specificity, as do histones
