In previous investigations it has been demonstrated that citrate has two different roles in urine with respect to calcium-oxalate stone formation: (a) a complex formation between calcium and citrate resulting in a decreased ion activity product for calcium-oxalate, and (b) a direct inhibitory influence on the crystallization of calcium-oxalate.
