In Chapter 6 we saw how water and air flows transport grains. We now consider how grain aggregates may, with the aid of gravity, transport themselves with no help from the overlying stationary medium. All gravity flows involving grains must overcome the effects of friction between particles. The following four idealised flow types achieve this in different ways (Fig. 7.1).
