Although rates of smoking are declining among North American adolescents, tobacco smoking remains the number one preventable cause of death. Due in part to the financial cost of utilizing biomarkers, most large studies of youth tobacco use rely on self-report to quantify the frequency and amount of cigarettes smoked. Unfortunately, self-reported smoking may be influenced by the means and situation in which the teen is queried and appears to be less sensitive among adolescents compared with adults. In this issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health, Malcon et al. report on the relative lack of agreement between self-reported smoking and urinary cotinine concentrations in a group of Brazilian adolescents aged 13 to 14.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
