The coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Clean Government Party (CGP), led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, maintained its power in the lower house election held in October 2017. Abe suffered a drop in cabinet approval due to ‘school scandals’, but he gambled on a snap election to recover power. The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) split into three parties before the election. With the support of three other ‘proconstitutional reform’parties, the LDP kept the necessary two-thirds of seats in both houses to initiate a national referendum for a constitutional amendment.
