A recent study reported that 50% of patients with anterior uveitis have a causally related systemic illness such as Reiter's syndrome, ankylosing spondyli-tis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, or interstitial nephritis (Table 1)[1]. This chapter reviews the clinical features and pathophysiology of the diseases associated with anterior uveitis. In many instances, the attributes of the uveitis are sufficiently distinctive that the diagnosis of the systemic illness is first suspected by the ocular presentation.
