uncommon manifestations of infection. This is in contrast to the experience in Nova Scotia, where pneumonia is the major clinical syndrome associated with C. burnetii infection (4, 10). In addition to sporadic cases occurring in the province, an outbreak of Q fever was recognized retrospectively to have occurred among research personnel in a Toronto research institute using pregnant ewes for perinatal research (11). As in other reported outbreaks, the disease was a potential hazard not only to those directly involved with sheep research, but also to those whose contact with the animals was brief and unintentional.
