Reviews literature suggesting early central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction in some individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, along with neuropsychological (NP) studies that have examined this issue. Evidence for early onset of HIV-induced mental changes is derived from case reports and subcortical CNS postmortem findings. Further support comes from abnormalities in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), brain imaging and EEGs, and NP tests of patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) or AIDS-related complex. Data on performance on NP tests by asymptomatic HIV-infected Ss compared with that of uninfected controls have been contradictory. Recommendations are made for evaluation and treatment when early HIV-induced mental changes are suspected.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
