Analytical determinations have been made of the levels of insect juvenile hormone (JH) from male and female Hyalophora cecropia. A deuterium-labeled form of JH was added as carrier and internal standard to crude lipid extracts. After partial purification, the ratio of protium form to d3form was found by combined gas chromatographymass spectrometry with continuous recording of the intensities of two rearrangement ions from the parent molecules. The observed level of JH in male cecropia was 1.8 ± 0.2 μg and in the female was 0.6 ± 0.1 μg.
