Orthodox microeconomic theory assumes that consumer preferences are exogenous and constant. Milton Friedman treats the assumption of constant and exogenous preferences as a cornerstone for the discipline of economics." The acceptance of the ends as given distinguishes it [economics] from psychology, which deals with the formation of preferences, and from ethics, which deals with the evaluation of preferences." l Friedman's statement notwithstanding, the assumption of constant and exogenous preferences is rejected by many researchers. Preference formation and change are incorporated into economic analysis in various studies of household behavior. 2 These studies econometrically test rigorous models, especially those that include habit formation and preference interdependence.
