This article sets out to examine four recent contributions to the debate on the role of planning and the market in the transition to socialism. The publication of these books in the mid-1970's reflected the growing awareness of the need to reconceptualise planning, the market, and politics in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. While all these books have contributed in important ways to the process of reappraisal of socialist political and economic relations. this article attempts to continue the reconceptualisation by means of a critique of these texts. This critique is' moderate'in the sense that it makes no attempt to detract from the considerable merits of these texts, but uses them rather as a means to develop a distinct approach to the problems.
