Young eggplants (Solanum melongena L. var. Senryo) were grown for 2 weeks with daily dark periods of 0, 2, 4, 6, 9 and 12 h to determine the effect of shortening the length of dark period on plant growth, incidence of leaf chlorosis and the status of K, Mg and Ca in tissues. Shortening the length of dark period affected the shoot:root (S:R) ratio. Growing plants with a daily dark period of less than 9 h led to the development of leaf chlorosis and a decline in the leaf chlorophyll concentration. The length of the dark period did not have a significant effect on the concentration of K, Mg and Ca ions in the xylem exudate. On the fifth day of treatment which was the time when leaf chlorosis first started to become visible, no decrease was observed in the levels of K, Mg and Ca content in leaves of plants grown with 0 h of dark period. Shortening the length of dark period did not suppress the levels of K, Mg and Ca in plant tissues which implied that the observed leaf chlorosis was not caused by a deficiency of either K, Mg or Ca.
