Adolescence, defined as the time between childhood and adulthood, is a time of great turmoil. The adolescent seeks to develop a personal and sexual identity, to form a sense of self-worth, and to define his or her role in society. For the adolescent with sickle cell anemia, there are additional difficulties related to having a chronic disease, which can lead to low self-esteem and depression. Guidelines for counseling and patient education are provided, as well as a discussion of the important transfer process from the care of a pediatrician to an internist.
